Ethical Summer Capsule Wardrobe: Guide to Look & Stay Cool
Summer is a divisive season: most people have strong feelings on whether they like or dislike the hottest time of the year. What they tend to agree on, though?
Summer feels like a challenging season to dress fashionably and ethically. I mean, try to create and accessorise a whole outfit when it's so warm that every additional item makes you regret your life choices! And so, when fast fashion brands tempt us with new mini dresses and tops, it can be hard to resist.
But there’s a solution: curating a versatile and ethical summer capsule wardrobe that works well for you.
After all, summer is also about taking it slow… Perfect for slow fashion!
The right mindset before building your ethical summer capsule wardrobe

- Think beyond this summer – Shop windows and your Instagram or TikTok feed are full of ‘new summer collections’. But buying based on temporary and impersonal trends results in a wardrobe of throwaway clothes that you only wear a couple of times before discarding them (ask your friend who went all in on neon-green brat summer in 2024), fuelling overconsumption and a negative environmental footprint.
Instead, think of “summer as a yearly season”, not “what’s trendy this summer”! And most importantly, start from your style (what clothes, designs, and colours make you happy whenever you rewear them?) - And think beyond summer itself, too – I’m creating capsule guides for each season, but they shouldn’t be completely separate. For example, you can easily wear some of your ethical summer clothes in spring, or use them as layers to build your autumn/winter outfits
- Buy less but better – No, you don’t need new outfits for every day of your summer holiday! I’ll show you how to start from your current wardrobe, but when adding to it, focus on summer clothes that:
- were produced ethically
- were made to last (not like that polyester fast fashion dress designed to fall apart)
- match your style
- are versatile, working well with each other and the pieces you already own (for example, it’s easier to pair up a print or patterned top with monochrome bottoms)
An ethical summer capsule wardrobe will save you money in the long run because, as well as getting to rewear your favourite pieces multiple times and for more than one summer season, you’ll break free from overconsumption (and those hauls of cheap pieces all add up!)
How to build a summer capsule wardrobe that’s stylish, functional, and ethical
- Start from your existing wardrobe – Go through everything, and sell or donate the summer clothes you always find excuses not to wear:
- What summer pieces do you already own and love?
- What do you still need to buy? (You’ll find an ethical summer capsule wardrobe checklist of essentials, later in this guide!) - Prioritise natural fabrics – Unlike synthetic ones (that can become ridiculously hot on your skin), natural ones are more breathable: perfect for summer!
For example, look for 100% recycled or organic cotton (ideally, with a lower threadcount, or if it’s not specified, items that feel lighter) or mixed with other natural fabrics, linen, bamboo, and hemp - Loosen up (as a true millenial, I can't read this without thinking Pussycat Dolls) – Loose clothing makes you feel cooler in summer because it promotes airflow, allowing sweat to evaporate and heat to escape from your body
- Consider lighter colours – Your capsule wardrobe summer colour palette should still mirror your preferences and style. But to stay even cooler, consider colours that reflect sunlight, like white, beige, yellow, light gray, and pastels, as opposed to all-black outfits
- Create new summer outfits using the same items in different ways – Yes, the heat makes it harder to use layers and accessories, but there are still plenty of opportunities! For example, the same loose button-up worn open can look completely different when you change the top underneath it and add shorts, linen trousers, or a skirt.
As for accessories: once again, it’s better to buy less but higher-quality (we’ve all seen what happens to cheap fast fashion jewellery that turns green or stains our skin when we start to sweat, right?)
Capsule wardrobe for summer: ethical summer clothes essentials and inspiration
White t-shirt
A staple you’ll get to wear throughout most of the year, too! I highly recommend recycled or organic cotton.
Summer top
Whether you prefer tank tops, spaghetti straps, or cropped designs, a monochrome summer top will work well on its own (with different bottoms) and underneath a light layer.
Ethical summer dress
One of the best parts about summer!
Depending on your preferences and how/where you tend to wear them, you could consider a short summer dress and a maxi one.
Shorts
Denim shorts work with most tops, or you could consider linen ones, too.
Breezy linen bottoms
When it comes to long trousers for summer, linen is my absolute favourite fabric!
Skirt
Much like with dresses, consider a short (or midi) and maxi one. If you mostly own monochrome tops, go wild with patterns!
White sneakers
As well as with your dresses and capsule wardrobe for summer, you’ll also get to wear them during the rest of the year.
Sandals or flats
Trust me: you’ll want at least one pair of summer shoes that you can wear without socks.
Swimwear
Sadly, traditional swimwear is the worst for the environment and the sea. So, invest in a kinder and better quality swimsuit or bikini for your summer capsule wardrobe (for example, one made with recycled fabrics).
Summer accessories to protect you from the heat
I’d especially recommend:
- A cap or straw hat
- Good-quality sunglasses (not flimsy fast fashion ones that could damage your precious eyesight!)
